David de Gea had a sterling 2015/16 season for Manchester United last term, and topped it all off by picking up United’s Player of the Year award for the third year in a row.

In fact the Spaniard’s audacious displays were almost too good in that they attracted interest from several cultured clubs across Europe, one of which has a track record of luring Manchester United players away.

Real Madrid have acquired the services of David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo in the past and looked certain to add De Gea to that list the season before last.

However, Madrid haven’t seemed interested in extending a bid this summer and by all accounts De Gea has settled into Jose Mourinho’s regime seamlessly.

Bringing in former Atletico Madrid goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez Blanco was widely seen as a masterstroke. He formerly coached De Gea at a young age and is seen as a key reason for him being so eager to ply his trade in Manchester for the foreseeable future.

The 25-year-old has since come out and spoken of how excited he is to be playing under the Portuguese coach and that he is looking forward to the season ahead.

Speaking with Press Association Sport he was clearly confident United would challenge for the title:

“I think we signed top players, really good players. We are Manchester United and we want to fight for everything.

“I feel for the fans, for the club and the players (that something exciting is coming) – you feel like (it is) a new era.

“I think the club is really strong now. The players, we want to everything and hopefully we can do it.”

In addition, De Gea has many positive things to say about the man at the helm, Jose Mourinho.

“He is a winner – he is one of the best managers in the world and we feel it. We are really comfortable with him.

“He is a strong character but he makes jokes. It is good for us to laugh and I think he is a really good manager.”

Given last season’s experience, Chelsea fans will be quick to point out that laughing during pre-season is well and good, but that hardly guarantees a successful campaign.

The Old Trafford faithful will feel, however, that De Gea being content at the club is one crucial step towards a successful title challenge this season.
