David De Gea Responds To Spain’s Surprise World Cup Exit

David De Gea has taken to social media to give his early thoughts on Spain’s surprise World Cup exit.

Fernando Hierro’s side exited the competition on Sunday on penalties after a 1-1 draw with hosts Russia – a bitter end to a campaign fraught with issues stemming from the sacking of Real Madrid-bound manager Julen Lopetegui just days before the tournament started.

De Gea, whose own performances were criticised to the point where some even wanted him dropped from the starting eleven, took to Instagram on Monday to reflect on Spain’s exit and insist that the team will come back stronger:

“To whom supported, criticised us with respect and suffered with us, thanks. We’re fucked but we’ll get up again and never give up.”

Midfielder Andres Iniesta confirmed his immediate international retirement in the wake of Spain’s World Cup exit, while it remains to be seen how the national side move forward now in terms of appointing a new manager.
