On this day 5 years ago, David De Gea signed for Manchester United from Atletico Madrid for a fee of around £17.8 million.

It has turned out to be one of the better signings Manchester United have made in recent history, and, to put it bluntly, God only knows where the team would be without the outstanding performances from the Spanish goalkeeper, in the last three seasons in particular.

De Gea arrived on June 29, 2011, and he had big boots to fill as club legend Edwin van Der Sar retired after six years of service at Old Trafford.

At the time, the 20-year-old struggled in his first season with a number of notable blunders. The Spaniard came in for much criticism, and was dropped by Alex Ferguson for a brief period.

One of De Gea’s main flaws during that season was his difficulty to deal with crosses. Many believed his character was too weak to be one of the leading voices of one of the biggest teams in the world.

The Spanish keeper admitted in a article with the Mirror 2 years ago that he considered leaving Manchester United during his first season due to his poor form and the heavy criticism he received.

De Gea’s performances have improved immensely since that first season though, to the extent that he has changed his public perception of being a untrustworthy goalkeeper who could be hit or miss in the big matches and almost always a minute away from a mistake, to coming full circle and now being one best keepers in the world, who at times has single-handedly keep a team in a match with his saves.

De Gea has won the Matt Busby Player of the Year award 3 years in a row at Manchester United. He is the first goalkeeper in the club’s history to win this fan voted award, and also the only player to win it in 3 consecutive seasons: 2014 ,2015 and 2016.

The 25 year old’s best attribute is his shot stopping ability. His reactions to shots are so fast, his reading of where shots will end up is top class and at times some of his saves are simply incredible.

As Manchester United have struggled hugely the past few seasons, it has seemed to bring the best out of De Gea.

The Spaniard has saved the Red Devils from humiliation in many situations where the team should of been beaten by three or four, but escaped with an unlikely 0-0 or even remarkably a 1-0 victory.

Possibly De Gea’s finest hour may have been his save on Romelu Lukaku’s spot kick in the FA Cup . Considering the enormity of the moment, the save was outstanding.
