Watch: Extraordinary Scenes in Cork As City Finally Claim The LOI

Cork City have finally been crowned champions of the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division tonight.

City went in to tonight’s fixture against Derry City at Turner’s Cross needing just a point to get their hands on the trophy and that is exactly what they did with a 0-0 draw.

For some time now it has been inevitable that the Rebel Army would indeed finish top of the league as a result of the blistering start they made to the season. They blazed a trail through everyone in their path, at times looking unplayable. This was thanks in no small way to the exploits of Seanie Maguire.

However, it is fair to say that since the departure of Maguire and Kevin O’Connor to Preston North End, City have stumbled across the line. With just one win in their last six games and Dundalk not on their heels, tonight’s result will come as a relief as more than anything, having once been 17 points clear at the top.

Manager John Caulfield did admit after tonight’s game that the team have struggled in attack recently without Irish international Maguire but they still did enough to best their great rivals of the past three years, Dundalk. They are champions with two league games still remaining.

See what Caulfield had to say straight after tonight’s final whistle here:

Tonight is now a night of celebration for the Corkonians as for the first time in twelve years they are the champions of Ireland.
