Cork City Mount Stunning Comeback To Defeat Dundalk In President’s Cup

The League of Ireland is well and truly back up and running after a thrilling President’s Cup encounter at Oriel Park on Sunday.

Matches between Cork City and Dundalk rarely disappoint and Sunday’s encounter was no different, with John Caulfield’s side coming back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 in highly changeable conditions.

Both sides observed a minute’s silence before the game in remembrance of former City midfielder Liam Miller, who tragically passed away this week, and applause rang out on the 22nd minute in homage to the shirt number Liam wore in his spell at Turner’s Cross.

Stephen Kenny’s side, who were looking for their first win against City since October 2016, made the perfect start when new signing Ronan Murray put them in front just before the 20-minute mark. The hosts doubled their advantage five minutes before half time through Murray again, and at that point it looked as though last season’s runners-up would be making a serious statement of intent for the year ahead.

Time and again, however, this Cork City team have shown that they simply don’t know when they’re beaten – especially when it comes to Dundalk. Karl Sheppard got the comeback ball rolling soon after the restart, and just seven minutes later the visitors were level courtesy of new arrival Barry McNamee.

As both sides hunted the winner, Kieran Sadlier completed the City comeback with just over ten minutes remaining with a wonderful strike from distance, and returning City hero Graham Cummins put the icing on the cake just two minutes later to effective seal a wonderful League of Ireland curtain-raiser.

Dundalk will have to wait that bit longer for that elusive victory over Cork City, but for the Leesiders, a third straight President’s Cup and another trophy for that ever-expanding cabinet.

If anticipation wasn’t already high enough for the beginning of the league season next week, then the events at Oriel Park will surely have gone some way to ramping up the excitement levels.
