Watch: The Clip That Sums Up Chelsea’s Wretched Tactics Against Man City

Chelsea drew widespread criticism for their negative tactics in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad.

Antonio Conte’s game plan was quite clear from the outset – to contain and frustrate the champions-elect and hit them on the counter. Unfortunately, that plan turned out to be a miserable failure and they ended up producing just three shots on goal over the course of the 90 minutes.

The reigning Premier League champions were troubling meek in their surrender to Pep Guardiola’s side, and one clip towards the end of the match highlighted everything that was wrong with their performance.

Some of the Chelsea players can be seen slowing to walking pace while Man City pass the ball around in front of them, with little or no interest in retrieving the ball and pushing further up the pitch to get themselves back into the game and rescue something from it.

In all, Man City enjoyed 71% possession to Chelsea’s 29%, had more than four times as many shots on goal (13-3) and successfully completed three times as many passes as their visitors (902-303).

Conte himself has since defended his side’s style of play in the defeat, but his tactics have come in for sharp condemnation:

With retaining the Premier League title now way beyond them, the pressure is now on Conte and Chelsea to beat Barcelona at Camp Nou next week and progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
