In a move that has surprised many, Chelsea have today reportedly agreed to re-sign David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea’s desperation for a central defender has led them back to the Brazilian international, as offers for Kalidou Koulibaly and Alessio Romagnoli were rejected by their respective clubs, and time is very much against them ahead of the transfer deadline.
Reports in England and France earlier today had stated that the Blues had entered into talks with Valencia for defender Aymen Abdennour over a possible loan move, and while that deal may still progress, the agreement to take Luiz back to Stamford Bridge looks very much on.
The Mail have today broken the story (corroborated by RMC in France) that there has been a significant breakthrough in negotiations between the two clubs – PSG were mindful of the fact that they would be making a significant loss on the player if they accepted Chelsea’s initial £30m bid last night, but the players desire to return to West London has softened their stance.

The 29-year-old is still a popular figure amongst the Chelsea fan base, having made 143 appearances in three and a half years at the club following a £21m move from Benfica in January 2011.
Luiz will likely undergo a medical and discuss personal terms this evening with the club he left just two years ago, before becoming Chelsea’s second defensive purchase of the day following the £24m deal to recruit Fiorentina left-back Marcos Alonso.
With just a few hours remaining of the window, however, they will have to be quick about it.
Chelsea are yet to make an official comment on either deal, but this will be done in due course. That being said, Chelsea did appear to hint at something when including the word “geezers”, an old favourite of Luiz’s, in a tweet this morning…
