Chelsea To Make Club-Record £60m Bid For Defender [Telegraph]

Chelsea’s determination to land defender Kalidou Koulibaly is set to see them approach Napoli with a club-record offer.

The Senegalese international has been Antonio Conte’s top defensive target all summer, and he is now seemingly prepared to go to extreme lengths to ensure that the centre-back ends up at Stamford Bridge before the end of the window.

The Telegraph are this evening reporting that the Blues are set to offer Napoli an incredible £60m in order to land the 25-year-old, in a deal which would make him comfortably the most expensive defender of all time.

Chelsea are expected to be among the busiest Premier League clubs in the final two weeks ago, but while many would have predicted that they would surpass the £50m spent on Fernando Torres four years ago to re-sign Romelu Lukaku or James Rodríguez, few would have expected them to do so for Koulibaly.

Napoli had reportedly been holding out for around £50m for the defender, spurning Everton’s £35m advances earlier this summer, so to see Chelsea go £10m over that figure is somewhat surprising.

Should Koulibaly sign, it is bound to put pressure on the English duo John Terry and Gary Cahill. Both started in Monday night’s Premier League opener against West Ham, but with Kurt Zouma due back from injury either next month or October, one of those two is set to lose his place.

If and when Koulibaly signs, and if Conte decides not to utilise his normally favoured 3-5-2 formation, then they will surely both drop out.

The reaction on social media so far has, understandably, focused on the eye-catching fee, although the general acceptance is that Koulibaly would be a good addition to the squad:

Chelsea appear to determined to get this deal over the line, and even though it won’t be the end of their spending this summer, this deal alone will certainly make a statement to the rest of the Premier League.
