The draw for the last sixteen of the Champions League has taken place in Switzerland on Monday morning.
With a relatively even spread between seeded and unseeded sides in terms of the bigger names, wining the group did not have the major benefit that it perhaps would have in previous years – those who finished top in their group still faced potential ties against Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
In all, five Premier League teams were in the hat for the draw, and because most of them were seeded, Chelsea knew that they had a one in three chance of drawing either Barcelona, Besiktas or recent Champions League foes Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.
Antonio Conte’s side were indeed paired with Barca in the end, with whom they have history in this competition. The other England v Spain draw in the pairings sees Manchester United take on Sevilla in a tie that Jose Mourinho will be happy with given who they could have drawn, while Liverpool will also fancy their chances against Porto in the next round.
Man City, meanwhile, will be favourites to overcome a determined but limited Basel side, while Tottenham v Juventus will be one of the most intriguing ties of the round.
The tie of the round could well be Real Madrid v Paris Saint-Germain, however, with the defending champions taking on many peoples’ tip for the competition.
