Managers shopping at their former clubs is not a new practice, so it is no surprise that new Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers would look to bring in one or two players from his old Liverpool side.
Having previously been linked with moves for Reds Kolo Touré and Joe Gomez, reports in Scotland are today claiming that Rodgers will look to recruit defender Andre Wisdom as he shapes his new squad.
Wisdom made his Liverpool debut under Rodgers – scoring in a 5-3 Europa League win against Young Boys – but has found opportunities hard to come by at Anfield.
Although he made 22 appearances in his first season at the club, Rodgers took the decision to loan out the former England youth international for three successive seasons.
Now 23, Wisdom must surely feel that unless he makes a strong impression on new Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, he will have to leave the club permanently – a fourth consecutive loan move would hardly be ideal.
The rumour, reported in today’s Scotsman, alleges that Celtic will offer £3m for Wisdom.
With Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all ahead of him at centre back (even allowing for the departures of Touré, Martin Skrtel and Tiago Ilori), and Nathaniel Clyne, Connor Randall and Jon Flanagan on the right, it seems unlikely that Wisdom will make it at Anfield.
To that end, he will probably leave on a permanent basis this summer – though whether or not he gets a reunion with ex-manager Rodgers in the Scottish Premiership remains to be seen.
