West Ham’s Andy Carroll has added his name to the growing collection of goal of the season contenders over the past few weeks.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Olivier Giroud brought scorpion kicks back into football lexicon over the Christmas period, but Carroll has instead gone for an old-fashioned overhead stunner.
With West Ham 1-0 up against Crystal Palace at the London Stadium on Saturday and the game heading towards the last ten minutes, the former Liverpool and Newcastle striker scored just his third goal of the season – but perhaps his best ever:
Michail Antonio crossed the ball into the box and instead of attempting to meet it with his head, Carroll instead went for the spectacular and powered an overhead kick past Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
The Hammers, still reeling from the news that Dimitri Payet is determined to leave the London Stadium this month, ended up winning 3-0 up against Sam Allardyce’s relegation-threatened Palace side. The defeat, coupled with Hull’s win against Bournemouth, leaves the Eagles outside the drop zone on goal difference alone.
