Marcus Rashford started this season playing for Manchester United’s Under 18’s as a largely unknown footballer even to the majority of Manchester United fans who only follow the first team.
Since Louis Van Gaal was forced to throw him in for the Europa League against Midtjylland, the goalscorer has netted seven strikes in 15 games with four goals in his first two senior starts against Midtjylland and Arsenal in February.
Louis Van Gaal has already likened him with dutch legend Patrick Kluivert, whom he managed at the same age at Ajax.
“Patrick was more already developed in body weight but that’s a matter of time, I think, with Rashford. But yes what Kluivert was in my first year at Ajax is Rashford now in my second year at Manchester United.” said Van Gaal.
Now Rashford has been likened to another legend of the game, the great Brazilian, Ronaldo.
The Brazilian legend has watched Rashford and sees many traits in the young English striker that he himself had had that age.
“He’s a very good young player,” Ronaldo told The Sun .
“I see some of myself in him for sure – he has courage and he’s fast and is very good with the ball. I think for the strikers they have to be hungry to score and I see that with him. He has an amazing future.”
Many Manchester United fans were dismayed by the decision of Van Gaal to dispense with Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez last summer, leaving his squad very light in attack.
With captain Wayne Rooney back to full fitness, the outstanding debut season of Anthony Martial and the unexpected find of Marcus Rashford, the future in attack for United looks brighter.
Fans need also not forget James Wilson, who this time last year was seen as the next big thing at Manchester United. Currently on loan at Brighton, he too has a bright future at Manchester United.
As for Marcus Rashford being compared to Kluivert and Ronaldo, the pressure is on to continue the promising start he has made and to meet the expectations placed upon him.
