Italian giants AC Milan have been the big spenders in Serie A having spent £110m and counting so far as they look to complete a much needed overhaul of a squad in a bid to return to their glory days.
Big name additions to Vincenzo Montella’s newly assembled side include Andre Silva, Andrea Conti, Hakan Calhanoglu, Mateo Mussachio, Ricardo Rodriguez, Franck Kessie and Fabio Borini.
There could be more to come with Milan believed to be interested in Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and rivals Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci who both reportedly want to leave their respective clubs.
Those two additions would be an incredible statement of intent. In addition, the San Siro-based club also managed to tie down goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to a new contract.
Let’s have a look at how big spending Milan could line up next season with the current additions.
Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Donnarumma
The 18-year-old six-foot-five giant of a goalkeeper has become a sensation ever since making his Milan debut at just 16. Donnarumma has nailed down the number one jersey with the club he grew up at and is tipped to be the national team’s successor to Gianluigi Buffon.
Donnarumma was heavily linked with a move away from the San Siro this summer having reportedly refused to sign a new contract with just one year left on his deal. However, Milan have eventually convinced their prized asset to sign a new deal and that could be their best business of the summer.
Defence: Andrea Conti, Mateo Mussachio, Alessio Romagnoli, Ricardo Rodriguez
A relatively young defence but Milan are building a team for the future to get back to the very top of European football. Right back Conti who joined from Atlanta loves going forward while another new signing in Mussachio could form a strong pairing with local player Romagnoli who has drawn interest from Chelsea in the past.
Swiss left back Ricardo Rodriguez who arrived from Wolfsburg is a player who a lot of top clubs have been linked with.
Central Midfield: Franck Kessie, Ricardo Montolivo, Manuel Locatelli
Twenty-year-old Ivorian midfielder Kessie was one of the best midfielders in Serie A last season and joined Milan from Atlanta on loan.
The defensive midfielder will be used to shield the Milan back four. Montella is likely to add further reinforcements to this area of the pitch which has been viewed as weak area for the past few seasons. However, club captain Montolivo will hope to earn his place back in the side following a long injury lay-off.
The 19-year-old Locatelli impressed last season despite a difficult season for Milan and the youngster has the potential to be an important player again this season.
Attack: Suso, Andre Silva, Hakan Calhanoglu
Spanish winger Suso did not make the cut at Liverpool but he has enjoyed a renaissance in Milan and he was arguably believed to be their best player last season. Portuguese striker Andre Silva arrived from FC Porto for €32 million and the prolific goal-scorer could be one of the signings of the summer.
Turkish set piece specialist Calhanoglu is famous for his free kick taking ability and the versatile playmaker can play anywhere across the attack.
This is a young Milan front line with a lot of potential but they may face some competition yet with Montella keen to bring in another big name striker before the summer is out.
