He may be only 16 years old, but Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is already turning heads in the League of Ireland.
Following reports that Liverpool had sent goalkeeping coach John Achterberg to watch the youngster against Derry City last week, Bazunu faced his toughest challenge yet with a trip to Turner’s Cross to face defending Premier Division champions Cork City – and, once again, came through with flying colours.
John Caulfield’s side simply couldn’t find a way through Bazunu, try as they might. The keeper’s moment of the night, however, came on the hour mark. City were awarded a penalty when Joey O’Brien felled Kieran Sadleir in the box.
Up stepped Sadlier to convert, as he had done five times from the spot already this season. Bazunu, however, had other ideas – making a terrific stop low to his right to deny the City forward.

The visitors held on for the point and the clean sheet – the sides’ fourth consecutive shutout with Bazunu between the posts – and on this form, not only will be hard for Stephen Bradley and the Hoops to keep hold of the young talent, but returning hero Alan Mannus will have a bit of work to do to get into this team.
Gavin Bazunu is some talent. A massive future ahead for him. Witnessed an absolute top class keeper in the making tonight @ShamrockRovers

16 year old Gavin Bazunu has now started 4 LOI games back to back and has kept 4 clean sheets. Tonight, he went to the home of the champions, with the experienced Alan Mannus available. He saved a penalty from one of the leagues top players. SIXTEEN.
