Bayern Star On Liverpool’s Radar As Klopp Plans Summer Overhaul

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC - AUGUST 29: Mario Gotze of FC Bayern Munchen during a training session prior to the UEFA Super Cup match between FC Bayern Munchen and Chelsea at Stadion Eden on August 29, 2013 in Prague, Czech Republic.

Jürgen Klopp got his first taste of Wembley with Liverpool on Sunday, and is seemingly prepared to do the necessary to make sure it becomes a regular occurrence.

Summer overhauls have become something of a tradition at Anfield recently – but with a manager in place that the fans would have over almost every one of the playing squad, this particular reshuffle is being wholly welcomed.

As such, Klopp has been given assurances (as per several publications this morning) that he will have the funds for a major rejuvenation of the Liverpool playing squad, with Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Götze sitting somewhere near the top of Klopp’s wanted list.

Götze, a national hero in Germany after his winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, only recently fit again after a lengthy groin injury, has struggled to regain his place in the Bayern team since his return – reportedly falling behind Thomas Müller, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry, Douglas Costa, Thiago Alcantara and Kingsley Coman in the Bundesliga side’s pecking order.

As such, Götze may decide to head for pastures new rather than have to prove himself all over again to incoming Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti.

That being said, it would take every last ounce of Klopp’s charm to convince the 23-year-old to resume their old Dortmund connection.

Götze is one of a few names touted around the reports this morning as Klopp looks to rebuild this struggling Liverpool team. Already confirmed are Marko Grujić and Joël Matip, and the Reds are expected to rekindle their interest in Udinese’s 21-year-old Polish international midfielder Piotr Zieliński and Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell.

Not much in the way of news on the raft of players Liverpool currently have out on loan, other than that Lazar Marković is to be given a chance to impress the manager, while Mario Balotelli absolutely won’t be.

With a raft of new faces set to come in, however, there will have to be outgoings.

Top of that list is £32million striker Christian Benteke. The Belgian international is clearly unfancied by Klopp, not even emerging from the bench in the Capital One Cup final on Sunday, and although he wants to prove his manager wrong and prove his worth to Liverpool, there seems to be very little prospect of a second season for the former Aston Villa forward.

Another who is set to find his place under threat is Simon Mignolet. The goalkeeper only signed a five year deal recently, but the Times are going with the theory that five year contracts aren’t a guarantee of any sort of place security, and that Klopp would be seriously looking at competition/replacements for the under-fire Belgian.

Meanwhile, Mignolet’s understudy Ádám Bogdán is to be quietly ushered out the back door.

Some players “definitely” on the way out (as per the Daily Mail) are the out-of contract Kolo Touré, João Teixeira and José Enrique, while Joe Allen is set to be sold on.

Either way, the Liverpool team that lines up on the first day of next season is set to look very different to the one that finishes the current campaign.
