Germany’s 2014 World Cup hero Mario Gotze is in talks with his old club Borussia Dortmund, according to Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (via Sport1).
The world champion is a product of the Dortmund youth system, which he joined at the tender age of eight. He broke into the first team at just 17 under current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has been linked with a move for the midfielder all summer. Gotze went on to win two Bundesliga titles as well as the German domestic cup back in 2012.
The season after they lost in the Champions League final to bitter rivals, and Gotze’s current club, Bayern Munich, who did the treble that year. This instigated a move to Munich, which led to animosity from most Dortmund fans, who are yet to forgive him. Since joining Bayern he’s won three league titles, two cups and a Club World Cup.
Gotze was expected to be one of the star men at the Allianz Arena because of his obvious quality, however he fell down the pecking order under former boss Pep Guardiola.
After sacking his agent this summer and saying he will not be leaving Bayern Munich, new manager Carlo Ancelotti has said that he can’t guarantee the 24-year-old a regular first team spot, which he so desired. This has led to Gotze’s exit now looking imminent, which is a shame as he has so much potential.
Bayern Munich’s chairman released a statement saying that he “can confirm that talks with Borussia Dortmund have taken place. There have also been talks with his agent, but the deal is not done just yet. Both clubs will have to reach an agreement over a transfer fee first.”
This means that we might be seeing Gotze back in the yellow of Dortmund, if they can match Bayern’s asking price.
This is bad news for Liverpool and Spurs fans though, as both sets of supporters thought he was England bound.
