Bayer Leverkusen Land Replacement For Arsenal Target With The Defender Open To A Move

Bayer Leverkusen’s capture of Dynamo Kyiv star Aleksandar Dragovic last night for £15.3 million has paved the way for Omer Toprak to depart the Bundesliga in favour of a move to Arsenal.

Dragovic, who is highly rated, arrives at the club amidst intense speculation that Toprak could either stay in Germany and join Borussia Dortmund or move to London, and link up with Laurent Koscielny in Arsenal’s defence.

Dragovic, 25, is set to make his debut for Bayer against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday evening as the Bundesliga finally returns after a long absence.

Toprak has been increasingly linked with a move to the Gunners ever since a breakdown in talks with Valencia over the proposed transfer of German international defender Shkodran Mustafi.

Arsenal believe that £25 million is a more than sufficient sum in order to acquire Mustafi’s services, but his Spanish employers are reluctant to part with their star player with questionable defenders such as Aymen Abdennour and Aderlan Santos being the club’s alternative options at the back.

Mustafi was not included in the starting line-up as Kevin Prince-Boateng led Las Palams to a 4-2 victory against Valencia at the Mestalla on Sunday.

And the performance given in the defeat, especially at the back, has forced club officials to cast a concerned eye at the team’s problems at the back, which will be difficult to resolve should Mustafi leave.

Hence, it is no wonder why Mustafi’s price tag has astronomically risen to around the £40m mark, as suggested by Sky Sports’ La Liga expert Guillem Balague.

Toprak is believed to be Arsenal’s prime alternative target to Shkodran Mustafi.

Balague believes that Mustafi is not nearly worth the staggering amount that Valencia are demanding, and as such understands why Wenger has chosen to look at other targets.

Toprak is certainly one, and the 27-year-old would certainly excite mans to a much larger extent compared to rumoured moves for West Brom’s Jonny Evans and Manchester United’s Phil Jones.

Toprak himself has admitted that he could move, in an interview with Turkish Football.

“It is not certain whether I will stay at Bayer Leverkusen, we still have a month and anything could happen until them.”

Toprak is believed to be valued at €20m.
