Bastian Schweinsteiger has been included in Manchester United’s squad for their upcoming Europa League tie with St Etienne, completing a remarkable return to the first team.
When Jose Mourinho took over as United manager, Schweinsteiger was considered surplus to requirements. The German midfielder was sent to train with the under-21 squad and it seemed he had played his last game for the club.
Schweinsteiger didn’t throw a tantrum or demand a move, though. Instead, he knuckled down and worked hard to prove his worth. He returned to first team training and was back on the pitch as a substitute in an EFL Cup tie in November.
His first start for over a year came in the FA Cup last weekend and he scored the fourth goal in a 4-0 victory over Wigan. That seems to have convinced Mourinho he still has something to offer, with the boss adding him to his Europa League squad.
A few fans have reacted positively to Schweinsteiger’s squad inclusion on Twitter, with praise for his attitude and hard work.
Absolutely love Schweinsteiger, hasn’t complained once just got on with and trained hard.. Deserves to be in the team ?

Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin have left the club, so their places in the squad had been vacated. Youngsters Dean Henderson and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have also been removed from the squad list.
