How Do Patrick Bamford And Callum Robinson Compare To Ireland’s Current Strikers?

Ireland Forwards 1

Championship strikers Patrick Bamford and Callum Robinson have been in the news recently having registered their interest in switching their international allegiance to Ireland.

Both forwards have played with England at youth level, but don’t seem likely to be making Gareth Southgate’s senior Three Lions squad any time soon. Bamford has been in good form for Middlesbrough lately, while Robinson has liely been persuaded to join the Boys in Green by the strong Irish contingent he currently plays with at Preston North End.

Ireland are in a healthier position now than they were eight months ago regarding the number of forwards at Martin O’Neill’s disposal – but with that in mind, how do the two potential new recruits compare to the three Ireland forwards called up for this month’s international friendly against Turkey – namely Shane Long, Scott Hogan and Sean Maguire?

On the face of it, Robinson or Bafmord’s goal tallies are relatively close to to the players that they would be attempting to dislodge. Bamford has been in terrific form recently, scoring eight goals in his last five Championship games, but he had scored just one league goal all season prior to that strong run of  goals.

There are, of course, a couple of mitigating factors in this. He has made just 17 league starts this season (14 more from the bench), and his recent streak has coincided with manager Tony Pulis moving him to a more central position having been used out wide for much of the campaign previously.

Robinson, meanwhile, has been played all over the forward and midfield lines by Alex Neil at Deepdale, and as such has been unable to nail down a consistent spot in the Preston starting eleven. The 23-year-old has scored four goals and conjured up six assists in 32 Championship games (22 starts), backing up the theory that he could be a big creative influence in the new-look younger Ireland setup.

Another interesting stat from the comparison Sean Maguire’s recent run of goals makes him by the far the most likely to get a goal in any one 90-minute spell this season.
