Ireland Fans Hail James McClean And Co. As They Claim Their First Ever Win In Austria

2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier, Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Vienna, Austria 12/11/2016 Austria vs Republic of Ireland Ireland's James McClean celebrates scoring the opening goal of the game

After seven previous attempts, the Republic of Ireland have finally claimed their first ever win in Austria.

James McClean was the hero of the evening with a brilliant goal just three minutes into the second half, and from there the away side only grew in confidence.

Against a disjointed Austrian side, Ireland had one or two chances to double their advantage but all the while keeping the home threat at bay.

However, Austria could have levelled it up late on but Marc Janko missed a sitter, resigning his team to a defeat and giving Ireland a famous win.

Social media has flocked to praise Martin O’Neill’s side, particularly the matchwinner McClean but the entire side deserves credit for a terrific away performance.

Ireland now sit on 10 points from a possible 12 points after four games, with the automatic qualifying spot surely now very much in their sights.
