The issues concerning Athlone Town have become that bit more serious, as the FAI have announced that they are widening their investigation.
The First Division side are already under suspicion regarding their 3-1 defeat to Longford Town last week, which saw a number of massive bets placed from overseas several bizarre occurrences, while the governing body also confirmed that it had been monitoring the club since receiving information from UEFA regarding the suspicious activity.
On Friday evening, the FAI announced that two more games involving the club are now under investigation as a result of initial findings.
“On May 3, the FAI announced that it had launched an investigation into Athlone Town AFC following a detailed report received from UEFA highlighting irregular betting patterns around their SSE Airtricity League First Division game with Longford Town on Saturday, April 29.
“The FAI has since learned – via confidential information received on Friday, May 5 – that two other games involving the club warrants further investigation.
“The FAI have contacted the club about this new information and will commence its investigation on Monday, May 8 when meeting with players, staff and officials.”
Athlone Town are in First Division action against league leaders Cobh Ramblers on Friday night, but with the managerial situation something of a mess, details of the ownership shrouded in secrecy and a number of players either walking away from the club or suspended, it seems that the problems are set to get far, far worse for the Town.
