Announcing a new signing should be exciting enough for fans, but football clubs have seemingly decided to start going the extra mile for the occasion.
Aston Villa confirmed on Monday morning that former Chelsea and England captain John Terry had signed for the club on a one-year deal, in what should be considered something of a coup for the Championship side.
However, their method of announcing his arrival is either inspired or cringeworthy, depending on what side of that particular debate you fall on. In an imaginary Whatsapp conversation between, owner Tony Xia and manager Steve Bruce, the former teases the arrival of Terry before finally announcing that he has become the latest Villa Park arrival, at which point some Villa “players” start chiming in..
It even includes a cameo appearance (in name only) from Villa and Ireland legend Paul McGrath…

As is the case with anything even vaguely outside of the norm, some social media reactions were either of praise for the originality or outright horror at the perceived temerity of it.

This is fantastically self aware. Both the signing and the announcement! Well done Villa.

Impressive from Villa social media team. Not sure why Gabby hasn’t been kicked out of the Whats App chat though. https://t.co/5QkEpXl1Bp

Still, as original as this was, Roma still hold the title for “Most Impressive Player Unveiling” this summer for their FIFA-inspired announcement of Lorenzo Pellegrini at the weekend:
