Aston Villa have this morning confirmed that they have appointed a successor to Roberto Di Matteo.

In a move that was practically confirmed by a multitude of media outlets on Tuesday night, Steve Bruce has been given the responsibility of getting the club’s season back on track.

Xia and Villa made the decision to terminate Di Matteo’s contract less than a fortnight ago, as a run of just one win in eleven games had seen the promotion hopefuls languishing in 19th place in the Championship. The 2012 Champions League winner had only taken charge several months earlier, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

A number of managers were linked with the role, including Steve Clarke and David Wagner, but Bruce was the frontrunner in the eyes of many from very early on in the process.

Bruce had been without a club since leaving Hull City just before the start of the new season. The 55-year-old had managed the Tigers to promotion at the end of the last campaign, and was subsequently interviewed for the England job, but a falling-out with Hull officials led to his resignation.

For the former Birmingham boss, this will be a chance to win his fifth promotion as a manager, earning him a reputation as being something of a specialist in that area.
