Arsenal were thought to be in the market for a new centre half.
At the end of last season, most observes believed Arsenal needed to sign players in three key positions if they were they wanted to be viewed as credible title contenders.
Although they secured the services of Granit Xhaka early in the transfer window, the Gunners’ frustrating search for a striker and centre half slowly rumble on.
Indeed, it would now appear that Arsenal could be about to give up on their search for a central defender, after Arsene Wenger indicated in the Metro that no such player would signed.
It [the Man City game] will contribute.
I already have an idea. It will contribute but on Sunday we will play against top-class strikers who will want to do well against us.
Our defenders will be tested so I might use a few combinations during the game. I believe that Bielik, Chambers and Holding will be fighting for the place between the three of them.
With Per Mertesacker injured and Laurent Koscielny recovering from his exertions during the European Championships, it would now appear one of Bielik, Chambers or Holding will start alongside Gabriel Paulista against Liverpool next weekend.
This will frustrate many supporters, as the Gunners have been linked with a number of defenders this summer, including Valencia centre-back Shkodran Mustafi.
Although Arsenal fans maybe horrified at the thought of such a partnership, James Milner’s injury means that Liverpool will probably start Alberto Moreno at left back.
