Arsenal may have to lose of their most integral players if they want to sign Jose Gimenez from Atletico, according to Spanish news outlet Don Balon.
Alexis Sanchez has been one of Arsenal’s finest players over the last two seasons, but the Gunners will have to sell the Chilean to the La Liga giants in order to land Gimenez.
Arsene Wenger’s side are woefully short at the back, with injuries to Gabriel and Per Mertesacker forcing Rob Holding and Calum Chambers into an unexpected partnership for Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool.
Gimenez would be an extraordinary acquisition for Arsenal considering his phenomenal performances for Los Rojiblancos, but Diego Simeone is unlikely to want to part with the Uruguayan.
Gimenez, who has a €65 million buyout clause, is not likely to exit the Vicente Calderon solely on an exchange of finances alone.
With Atletico keen to retain the player, Sanchez’s arrival is the only factor which would sway the Spanish outfit into allowing Gimenez to join Granit Xhaka, Rob Holding and Takuma Asano.
If Arsenal refuse to negotiate with the Madrid giants as expected, Shkodran Mustafi is left as the alternative target.
However, talks have stalled over Valencia’s unwillingness to lower their asking price, but Arsenal’s stubborness could result in an angry horde of supporters outside the Emirates after the transfer window..
