In today’s Arsenal news, goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has warned new signing David Ospina to expect to spend some time on the bench, and reports suggest Arsene Wenger made a move for Nikola Zigic during the transfer window.
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has not exactly welcomed new employee David Ospina to Emirates with open arms telling him in no uncertain terms that the first team goalkeeping berth is not up for grabs. The Colombian netminder was brought in over the summer from Nice as back up and possibly even competition to the incumbent.
The Pole stressed the former would be the case, his rant was reported in The Independent, comparing Ospina to his long term back up, compatriot Lukasz Fabianski he said
“He is a nice guy. In a sporting sense, he is a suitable player at a suitable club. But it’s easier for me just in one aspect: I do not feel sorry for him. I do not think ‘he’s my friend’ as I thought about Fabian [Fabianski]. I was convinced Lukasz deserved to play but not at my expense.”
Fabianski quit the Emirates over the summer and his departure to Swansea has seen him secure the first team football alluded to by his former club mate in the quote. New challenger Ospina is not only up against a forceful personality but a talented shot stopper as well, last season’s 16 clean sheets were enough to see Szczesny awarded the Premier League’s golden glove.
Meanwhile Danny Welbeck’s arrival at the Emirates continues to grab headlines in the British press. The Express has reported comments from ex Birmingham City man and current free agent Nikola Zigic that Arsene Wenger had considered him for the striking vacancy before ultimately landing the English star.
“My agent was talking with Arsenal but they finally opted for another player. We talked with them until the last few days of the market. I am very happy because Arsenal had me on their list. I would have liked it.”
The fact that Arsenal were contemplating signing a Birmingham City reject just shows the desperate situation the Gunners boss found himself and what a good result bagging the Manchester United man was.
Welbeck himself meanwhile continues to say all the right things to endear himself to the Arsenal faithful. The Independent reported his comments regarding his idol Thierry Henry
“I loved watching Thierry Henry since I was a little kid. My two idols are Ryan Giggs and Thierry Henry so to come to the club where he was and had so much success at is something you can look up to and try to stamp your own print on the club.”
Arsenal fans can only hope that the 23-year-old produces some of the magic that made the French genius an Arsenal legend.
