Arsenal fans’ wait for the arrival of a top class defender has taken all summer and now, with only days remaining in the transfer window, it appears that wait is about to end.
In what has taken weeks to play out, Arsène Wenger’s search for an experienced defender is all but over, with a reported deal worth in excess of £35 million being agreed for the Germany international, Shkodran Mustafi.
According the Sky Sports’ Marc Behrenbeck, while the Valencia defender is still in Spain, a medical could be completed as early as today.

If Arsenal were to move quickly, fans could well see the 24-year-old lining out for the Gunners in their Premier League fixture against Watford on Saturday. However, in reality, Gooners will likely have to wait until September 10th and the visit from Southampton before they can see just what all the fuss was about.
Regardless when Mustafi does make his debut for Wenger’s side, expectations will be that he shore up the pourous back line immediately and restore confidence in a defence that has been denuded of experience during the summer.
With regular centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Gabriel sidelined with injury, Mustafi will have the perfect opportunity to cement his place in the Arsenal side and prove to both the manager and fans that he was both worth the wait and the eye-watering fee.
