Arsenal Move Ahead Of Chelsea As Favorites To Sign Riyad Mahrez

Arsenal

Arsenal have moved ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez.

Express claimed earlier today that Antonio Conte had set his sights upon the Algerian winger after The Guardian reported that Mahrez had rejected a new £100,000 a week contract with the Premier League champions.

But Chelsea will have to stave off competition from Arsenal for the Algerian, after SkyBet made the Gunners 7/2 favourites to sign the former Le Havre winger.

Alexis Sanchez has been linked with a move to Juventus, but Mahrez’s arrival at the Emirates would be welcomed regardless following a relatively quiet summer after the signing of Granit Xhaka.

Chelsea have been placed at 5/1 to recruit the 25-year-old, whilst you can get odds of 1/1 for Mahrez to stay with Leicester.

Mahrez cost Claudio Ranieri’s side a modest sum of £400,000 in January 2014 before aiding the Foxes promotion from the Championship.

Since then, he has grown from strength to strength as a player, scoring seventeen goals and providing eleven last season as the club won their first ever Premier League title.

Ranieri had previously spoken to the Leicester Mercury about his confidence of keeping Mahrez, but it seems that the lure of a new challenge away from Leicester is too tempting.

Barcelona have already ruled themselves out of the race to sign the winger, with the Mirror claiming that the Catalans are more than content with their summer signings bar a forward.

The same source claims that Pep Guardiola has been impressed enough with the PFA player of the year that he would be willing to pay the rumoured £35 million price tag, which could indicate an end to Raheem Sterling’s career at the Etihad.

Should Mahrez follow N’Golo Kante out of the King Power?
