Arsenal’s incredible drubbing of London rivals Chelsea at the weekend was tarnished by the sight of key midfielder Francis Coquelin limping off the field, nursing a suspected knee ligament injury.
The 25-year-old has had a strong start to the new campaign and looked to be back to his best following a dismal, injury-blighted season last time around. Now, however, things are looking increasingly grim for the unlucky midfielder.
A medial ligament injury last year kept the France international out of action for two months and following a knock during Saturday’s clash with Chelsea, it now appears that the same injury has struck again.
According to the Mail, medics at Arsenal are now fearing the worst and are anxiously awaiting the results of a scan, due to take place on Monday. Should the news of medial ligament damage be confirmed, it is feared Coquelin could be sidelined until the new year.
This is not the news that Arsène Wenger, fans and the player himself will want to hear. The Gunners are in superb form following a slow start to the season and after their emphatic victory over Chelsea, it seemed that title ambitions can now be spoken of with real confidence again this season.
While things are looking bleak for Coquelin, fans have taken some solace from the fact that Wenger has the luxury of being able to call on summer signing and wonder goal-scoring supremo Granit Xhaka to fill the void left by the Frenchman.
With news of the impending scan not expected to be positive, you can’t help but feel for the hapless Coquelin as his run of injury misfortune looks set to continue until 2017.
