What could have been a big saga in January looks to have been averted with strong reports coming from France that Julian Draxler has decided on his next club.

The German international’s relationship with current side Wolfsburg has collapse in dramatic fashion in the past few months, and while the Bundesliga club disregarded his wish to leave in the summer, they have been left with little alternative in January.

The two-way battle between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain was interrupted by late contenders Liverpool, but according to Goal France reporter Loïc Tanzi and French publication L’Équipe, he has decided to shun Premier League interest and move to the Ligue 1 champions.

Where before Wolfsburg could have effectively named their price for the 23-year-old they signed from Schalke 18 months ago, but the situation has become so toxic that they will now pretty much have to settle for breaking even on the €36m they reportedly spent on him in the first place.

The news will come as a setback to Arsenal and Liverpool, both of whom wanted the highly-rated playmaker to play a big role in their respective title challenges.

PSG, meanwhile, will need Draxler for the same reason. Their domestic season has not gone at all to plan, with the league holders sitting five points behind surprise leaders Nice in third place despite another summer of heavy investment.. The signing of Draxler will undoubtedly be a huge lift to the club but it will take more than another expensive signing to help under-pressure manager Unai Emery.

Neither club has announced the deal yet, but it does seem to be only a matter of time before Draxler is confirmed as a PSG player.
