Both Liverpool and Arsenal could become embroiled in a bidding war.
As Arsenal’s attempt to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan appears to be floundering, Arsene Wenger has been on the look out for alternative attackers to play behind the leading striker.
Although the gunner’s boss has identified Mario Gotze as a potential transfer target, Arsenal could face massive competition from Liverpool in the race to sign the Bayern Munich star.
Despite being dumped on the fringes of the Bayern squad last season, according to The Sun, Arsenal plan to spend £27 million on bringing the World Cup winner to the Emirates Stadium.
Their bid seems to be based on suggestions that the Bundesliga champions want to offload the player, as they can no longer justify paying Gotze his £110,000 per-week salary.
However, as the newspaper believe that Liverpool are also in the hunt to sign Gotze, Arsenal may find it difficult to attract the the forward, given the player’s previous relationship with Anfield boss, Jurgen Klopp.
After finishing second in the Premier League last season, Wenger is evidently desperate to add players who can turn his side into title winners, and sees Gotze as one such individual.
Indeed, if the gunners did land Gotze, he could be potential be part of a forward four that includes, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Jamie Vardy.
