It’s looking increasingly likely that Per Mertesacker will leave Arsenal at the end of the season.
Despite being Arsenal’s captain, Per Mertesacker has yet to be offered a new contract at the club, as Arsenal are prioritising deals for Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
However, given the form of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi, both as individuals and as a partnership, Mertesacker will find it very difficult to even break into the Arsenal starting XI in the coming months.
As a result, there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding the future of the 104 times capped German international, with some even suggesting that Mertesacker will leave the club once his contract expires next summer.
Although Arsenals fans have an affinity with 6′ 6″ defender, the presence of Gabriel and Rob Holding in Arsene Wenger’s squad raises questions as to Mertesacker’s long term future at the Emirates Stadium.
As do persistent reports linking Arsenal with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez. The 21 year-old Uruguayan has become one of the most sought after defenders in Europe after establishing himself in the heart of Diego Simeone’s defence.
However, doubts surround the future of the Argentinian, who has been linked with a number of potential managerial vacancies throughout Europe.
Consequently, Arsenal have been alerted to Gimenez’s possible availability, and according to The Mirror, could make a £40 million move for the defender next summer.
However, although Gunners fans would welcome such a move, the article also suggests that Manchester United are also interested in the defender.
