Arsene Wenger will spend the festive period mulling over his options in the upcoming transfer window after seeing his side drop six points and slip nine points behind leaders Chelsea in the past week.

The Sun report the Gunners are interested in Valencia left-back Jose Gaya as they attempt to shore up their defence having already snapped up Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia last summer.

The Los Murciélagos youngster has eleven caps for the Spanish Under-21s and has been a standout player for a struggling Valencia side in recent seasons, and has also been tipped to have a bright future in the game.

The advancing years of Nacho Monreal and the lack of playing time given to Kieran Gibbs suggests the latter may be surplus to requirements, particularly following the reported interest in the 21-year-old Spaniard.

The contract issues regarding both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez will, however, be key when it comes to the club’s chances of ending their 12-year title drought.

Incomings at Arsenal will be affected by the stand-off between the club and Sanchez and Ozil. The outcome of these apparent disputes may have an effect on where the Gunners are heading this year having returned to their familiar fourth place last weekend.

The club also look set to miss out to Paris St. Germain for German World Cup winner Julian Draxler, who looks set to leave Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg next month.

Perhaps an indication of the pulling power of the French champions and their philosophy of paying the going rate for potential stars.
