Under pressure Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has more bad news to deal with, as both Laurent Koscielny and Mesut Ozil face battles with injuries.
Arsenal’s injury crisis deepens with the news that French international Laurent Koscielny has been sent home from his national squad due to an Achilles problem, according to The Independent. While the injury is not believed to be serious, the French Football Federation characterised the decision as a precautionary move, it will doubtless add to the pressure Wenger is under. The Frenchman is already stretched to the limit with eight players from his squad sidelined.
This latest casualty is in addition to a host of other key Arsenal players out with Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta, Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott Mathieu Debuchy and Mesut Ozil amongst the big name players on the treatment table.
Ozil sustained a serious knee ligament injury during last week’s 2-0 defeat to rivals Chelsea. The Mail reports that Arsenal asked the German FA to check up on the midfielder’s injury when he linked up with the national squad for European Championship qualifiers. The London club were apparently incensed at the the lack of discretion the Germans displayed in posting a full update on the injury on their official Twitter account, anticipating a lengthy 12 week lay off for the player.
Arsenal for their part have sought to play down the report insisting that nothing is confirmed yet.
Last season was also a disaster for Arsenal on the injury front, they were top of the table until after Christmas when their title challenge fell apart due to injuries to key players. In an effort to improve the situation Wenger recruited fitness expert Shad Forsythe who was part of the all conquering German set up during this year’s World Cup.
Clearly this move hasn’t yet had the impact the Frenchman was looking for, and things will need to change urgently if his charges are to figure in the title race.
