Arsenal Eye Free Agents To Solve Defensive Crisis

Arsenal are considering making moves for free agents Joseh Yobo or Diego Lugano as Arsene Wenger looks for a short term solution in defence after a disastrous 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund.

According to the Daily Mail Arsene Wenger is now looking at signing former Everton defender Joseph Yobo or former West Brom centre half Diego Lugano.

Arsenal are short of defensive cover at centre half and both players would provide Premier League experience to a depleted Arsenal defence.

Summer signing Mathieu Debuchy has not broken his ankle but he is still unsure how many weeks of football he is likely to miss. He posted an update on the situation on his Facebook page

“No fracture but one broken ligament, I have to wait until Friday in order to know if I must have surgery”

Diego Lugano only spent one season at West Brom but struggled with the pace of the Premier League. However previously in his career he captained his country Uruguay to an impressive 4th place in the 2010 World Cup and at club level enjoyed a hugely successful 5 year spell at Turkish club Fenerbache.

Former Everton defender Joseph Yobo could be the better option though. The 34-year-old has vast experience at Premier League level after spending eight seasons with the Toffees. The Nigerian defender spent the latter half of last season on loan at Norwich making 8 appearances but could not prevent the club from being relegated to the Championship.

Midfielder Mikel Arteta has admitted that the Gunners need to improve their performances.

“If you make the mistakes that we did [in Dortmund], against top sides, we know that there is no chance to win the Champions League,” Arteta said. “We have to react. We have to analyse what we have done wrong and try to improve. The best thing is that we have another game against Villa.

“There was a draw between Galatasaray and Anderlecht [in the other game in Arsenal’s group] but we need to recover from our result. We know that Dortmund is one of the toughest places in Europe to come and we’ve seen Real Madrid get battered here as well [4-1 in the 2013 semi-final]. Most of the teams struggle here but we had a different game in mind before the start.”

Would either of these two vastly experienced centre backs help Arsenal address the defensive issues alluded to by Arteta? On the face of it Yobo looks a better option, but either way the Gunners are in urgent need of new recruits.
