For three months a year, from June to the start of September, Arsenal fans should just go into hibernation.
Countless rumours swirl as optimism builds only for it all to swiftly drain and we’re left where we are now. “The Welbeck Stage”, the top players across Europe have all either turned you down or Arsene Wenger has refused to loosen the purse strings and we arrive at the final target. It started out as a bit of a punchline but a few weeks later, it suddenly looks inexplicably possible.
Jonny Evans could actually join Arsenal. Potentially for up to £25 million.
Meanwhile, despite looking almost inevitable a matter of days ago, the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi is now looking out of the question after Valencia’s manager denied any possible switch after reports of a €50 million buy-out clause emerged.
Arsenal fans, it’s fair to say, aren’t best pleased.
If Arsenal sign Jonny Evans I'm fucking done and will never call myself an Arsenal fan again

£25m for Jonny Evans.
Preferable to £50m for Mustafi.
Both examples of why you do your business early.

The rest of Twitter meanwhile, had a slightly different reaction.

£25 million for Jonny Evans, 'cos there's no quality in the market. Except for Zlatan, Pogba, Mkhitaryan and Bailly. pic.twitter.com/GYAJWbTp6F

Jonny Evans has gone from potential United captain to Arsenal target. Some fall that.

There’s a long way to go in the Evans move but the whole thing does seem (hilariously) inevitable.
