Having been tipped to leave Arsenal all summer, French international Mathieu Debuchy could now be included in Arsene Wenger’s XI for the club’s opening Premier League fixture of the season against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
The Gooners are horribly short on defensive options at the moment – Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista are both injured, while talisman Laurent Koscielny is not yet ready for action following his exploits at the European Championships in France – forcing Wenger to turn to a player that has not appeared in club colours since last November.
Suggestions are that Debuchy, who spent time on loan with Bordeaux last season, will help boost the Gunners’ defence against the Reds, despite being reportedly offered to Galatasaray in recent days, according to Goal.com, and now being of interest to Serie A side Roma, according to a report in La Gazzetta dello Sport on Sunday.
The inclusion of Debuchy would be a remarkably turnaround for the player, given how disappointing his time at the Emirates has been to date since his £12 million move from Newcastle two years ago. Injury has curtailed his opportunities somewhat but his progress has also been massively hampered by the emergence of Hector Bellerin as a viable option at full back.
The 31-year-old’s possible return has also been met with mixed reaction on Twitter.
Seriously thinking debuchy as CB would be the prudent choice https://t.co/uJitnE9JiH a bit of nasty&experience. Let’s get that win Reds

With the options available hoping Wenger goes chambers and holding & not Monreal or debuchy at CB

Debuchy could be in line to start at CB tomorrow. The last time he played at CB was also against LFC. He scored too. Either way, I’m scared.
