The future of Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has been a topic of discussion for a number of weeks now, with reports that both Barcelona and Manchester City are interested in poaching the 21-year-old from the London club.
Gunners fans have been monitoring the situation with a growing sense of uneasiness, as despite having three seasons left on his current deal external interest in Arsène Wenger’s star defender has not abated.
Now, according to the Mirror, fans might finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief. According to reports, when asked recently what he might do if former club Barcelona came calling the Spain international simply said:
“I wouldn’t pick up the phone!”
These six words will come as music to the ears of supporters and Wenger alike. The Arsenal boss is adamant that the young Spaniard’s future lies at the Emirates Stadium and has expressed surprise at the persistent speculation linking his defender with other suitors.
“Of course his future is at Arsenal. That’s why I’m surprised by the speculation. He has nearly three years to go (on his current contract) and we always try get the players to the level where we think they deserve to be.”
“So we will certainly try to extend his contract, but for me, his long-term future is here. His progress has been absolutely spectacular because he has top mental strength. I think he loves to be here and he has responsibilities already in the dressing room for such a young age, it’s something remarkable.”
Considered the future of the Arsenal right-back position, Bellerin has become a critical part of Wenger’s squad since his arrival from the Barcelona academy back in 2011.
Now an established starter and full international with his native Spain, the future appears bright for the young defender, a future that looks increasingly likely to be spent with Arsenal.
