Arsenal football club appears in fine fettle. Their comfortable win against Stoke on the weekend was the latest in a string of positive results. They have plundered a flurry of goals, most of which can be attributed in some way to Mezut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez. The fact that both are mired in contract controversies understandably stokes fear among Arsenal fans. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain being pulled into the mess will only add to such off-field woes.

As reported by The Mirror, the Englishman’s contract negotiations are yet to be initiated. Such lethargy understandably frustrates him given he has just 18 months remaining on his current contract and will be eager to remain at the London club. While he has struggled to nail down a starting berth at the Emirates, he is understood to be enjoying lining up alongside world-class talents such as Sanchez and Ozil. The challenge of playing to their level is understandably a tantalising prospect for the young midfielder.

Intriguingly, the alleged stagnation with his negotiations don’t tally with previous reports. The Standard reported last week that, according to Wenger, ‘The Ox’ was in talks with the club as both were eager to nail down a new deal. Whether the more recent reports indicate that the previous musings were inaccurate, or that talks have taken a turn for the worst, remain to be seen.

What is clear however, is that Arsenal’s title prospects may ultimately boil down to the January transfer market. With Liverpool’s defensive frailties laughably gaping and Manchester City struggling to adapt to Pep’s ideologues, Chelsea and Arsenal appear to be the only two genuine contenders on recent form.

Chelsea’s stunning string of victories can be attributed to a wide range of actors, from the coach and wing-backs to Diego Costa. Arsenal’s form is thanks to a more concentrated group however. Primarily, just Alexis Sanchez and Mezut Ozil. Locking them in for the season, in tandem with Oxlade-Chamberlain could well set Arsenal on their way to a Premier League title.

Bidding them adieu would likely usher in yet another league disappointment.
