Arsenal Close In On Two Deals As Liverpool Miss Out [Reports]

Liverpool v Arsenal - Premier League

In recent years, Arsenal and Liverpool have been close rivals in the transfer window…

Three years ago Arsene Wenger attempted, with a certain amount of cheek, to trigger Luis Suarez’s release clause at Liverpool with a £40m and £1 bid.

Then, only a year later, the Frenchman managed to successfully ward off Liverpool’s interest in Alexis Sanchez. A deal which has since seen the Chilean score an impressive 29 goals for Arsenal in just two seasons.

And now, it seems this close rivalry is set to hit unprecedented levels.

To start, Arsenal are being linked with a big move for Bayern Munich and Germany star Mario Gotze according to a report in The Sun.

The German, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, had been rumoured to be on his way to Liverpool at the start of the window, rekindling his relationship with former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp.

However, he has since turned his nose up at this move, with sources close to Gotze saying he was not impressed with their Premier League form in recent years.

Given Arsene Wenger’s long-term admiration of the German, Arsenal are now ready to pounce with a £27m bid, but don’t expect any big movements to occur before the end of Germany’s campaign in Euro 2016 (which could stretch all the way to the final).

And in other news, Wenger could further dampen the spirit of Liverpool fans with a surprise move for striker Daniel Sturridge with The Express now reporting that the Gunners are the bookies favourites to sign the England international this summer.

Sturridge, who has also played for Manchester City and Chelsea, is currently the hero on international duty as he fired England to a late victory over bitter home-nation rivals Wales.

But away from this, Arsene Wenger is apparently a fan of the Englishman, and is ready to splash the cash to lure him from Merseyside.

This may prove difficult, however, as Liverpool have slapped a £50m price tag on the player.

Wenger and Arsenal will work tooth and nail to bring this price down, but given Liverpool’s stubbornness the last time the two clubs went about agreeing a fee (Luis Suarez, 2013), it would be to no surprise if a deal cannot be done.

Given Sturridge’s injury record, and Arsenal’s burning issue in this exact area, this may not be a bad thing. Although, no one can deny the finishing ability the Englishman would bring to north London.

Arsenal are yet again proving to be Liverpool’s worst nightmare this transfer window, much to the delight of Arsene Wenger.
