With Arsenal challenging for their first league title since 2004, the Gunners have now been linked with January reinforcements in the form of Wolfsburg winger Julian Draxler and Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been a long time admirer of German international Draxler, having attempted to sign him from Schalke, the club with which the youngster made his Bundesliga debut, aged 17, and went on to play in 171 competitive matches for, scoring 30 goals.
However, Wenger was unsuccessful in bringing the highly regarded youngster to the Emirates, and he joined Wolfsburg instead for a club record £25.5million in 2015, where the World Cup winner has made 34 appearances, scoring nine goals.
However, the 23-year-old’s career with Die Wölfe could be about to draw to a close having been omitted from the squad to face Bayern Munich on Saturday, with rumours circulating that the midfielder won’t play for the club again, with some even going as far as to say he’s been told he won’t feature again for the German outfit.
That appears to have handed Arsenal a big boost in their pursuit of long-term target Draxler, and reports in the Sunday Express suggest that the Gunners are set to make a £30 million move for the Wolfsburg midfielder in January.
Capped 27 times by Germany, Draxler is known for his speed, keen eye for goal and possesses exceptional talent in one-on-one situations from his regular position as a left-sided attacking midfielder, though he can also play on the right wing as well as in an attacking midfield position.
The Gladbeck native certainly possesses all the attributes and skill necessary, which would make him a welcome addition to the Emirates.
Meanwhile, the Sun have linked the Gunners with Premier League rivals Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.
The soon-to-be 24-year-old, regarded as one of England’s brightest young talents, has been on United books since 2000, progressing through the youth ranks to ascend into the first team, where he has made 54 appearances and scored notable goals, such as the opening goal in the 2016 FA Community Shield and the winner for United in last season’s FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, having come on as a second-half substitute for fellow goalscorer Juan Mata.
With the midfielder’s contract due to expire at the end of next season and with a fresh deal at Old Trafford yet to be agreed, Wenger may look to lure the England international, capped three times, to the Emirates.
