Daryl Horgan made his first appearance last week for Preston North End in a ten minute cameo in the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal. Horgan showed flashes of what he is capable of even if the end product was missing.

Fast forward a week and Horgan was given his first start by Simon Grayson as Championship high flyers and promotion-chasing Brighton visited Deepdale in search of three points to keep the momentum going.

However, Chris Hughton’s charges would be disappointed as Horgan played a huge part in a big win for his new club.

The former Dundalk winger along with Irish team mate Aidan McGeady starred while two other Irish players also started for Preston in defenders Greg Cunningham and Alan Browne.

Meanwhile, Shane Duffy started at the heart of the Brighton rearguard. A good Irish presence on the pitch then but most of the attention was on Horgan and he duly delivered with Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane watching on.

Preston took an early lead in the 13th minute as Paul Huntington headed home Paul Gallagher’s free kick. It was Horgan who got the assist for Callum Robinson’s goal just after the break to give Preston a 2-0 cushion.

In front of 11,391 supporters the Galway native delivered an exquisite ball over the top which Robinson who also scored against Arsenal latched onto and slotted home to double Preston’s advantage.

In the 76th minute, Horgan came very close to adding a goal of his own to his assist.

Horgan eventually made way in the last minute of the game after an outstanding performance and received a well-deserved standing ovation from the home crowd.

Preston North End have a new hero.
