Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez is making headlines for scoring an outrageous goal in last night’s encounter with AZ Alkmaar.
The sides were level at 1-1 when the Colombian central defender attempted to score his fifth ever goal for Ajax. Sanchez was the unlikely provider as he put his side ahead in the 71st minute. This sparked a second half revival for his team and they went on to win the game comfortably by four goals to one.
This came on the same night as Barcelona’s Luis Suarez scored a similar goal for his side against Sevilla. However, Suarez is more likely to be able to repeat this feat and has the natural skill required to pull it off. There’s something just slightly odd about a defender scoring or even attempting a shot like this.
After watching the video you may question if the Ajax centre-back was perhaps lucky to score. He intentionally went for the bicycle kick however – you can see that he kicked the ball with the outside of his foot. This causes the ball to almost ricochet into the bottom corner of the net and to to the right of the goalkeeper.
Perhaps it was just luck or maybe he meant it. He’s going to claim the latter and you can’t blame him. In truth, it looked amazing and he deserved the plaudits he received from the supporters although many might have surprised it was him who scored.
Centre-backs aren’t always known for their ability on the ball or the amount of goals they score but then again, that’s not why they are usually in a team. For Sanchez of Ajax, you can’t take away from the fact that he scored and did so in magnificent fashion.
