Harry Maguire is in talks with the Manchester United hierarchy over potentially signing a new contract.
The England international has a deal that expires at the end of the season, with question marks over his immediate future at Old Trafford.
Maguire is a piece of the furniture at United, having joined the club from Leicester in the summer of 2019.
Given the sea of change at the club over the years, with new managers, players and board members, Maguire’s commitment to the cause has never been in doubt, despite periods out of the side.
United’s struggles over the years have seen Maguire receive the brunt of the criticism, particularly after his £80million arrival saw him become the world’s most expensive defender.
However, he has won the hearts of supporters with his desire and vitally important goals, not forgetting the last-gasp Europa League semi-final header against Lyon last season.
Does Harry Maguire deserve a new contract at Manchester United?
There will be an ongoing debate as to whether Ruben Amorim should keep Maguire or decide it’s time to move on.
At the age of 32, he may have a year or two in his legs before his age, pace, and fitness will start to be called into question regularly.
Then there’s the salary. If reports are accurate, Maguire will put pen to paper on a £140,000-a-week salary, which is around the same as he earns now.
Maguire was previously on £190,000-a-week; however, he saw his wages cut by 25% after the club missed out on qualifying for a European competition.
It’s also evident that Amorim is keen to build his side without Maguire having a regular starting role.
He’s started two Premier League games this season, in the 2-1 win over Chelsea before having a poor game in the 3-1 defeat at Brentford.
Maguire only started half of the Premier League games last season, with the manager often throwing him on late in games in an attempt to rescue a result with his aerial prowess.
His experience can’t be overlooked, particularly with an influx of youngsters coming through the ranks.
Some of United’s younger talent can take note of Maguire’s professionalism and his positive attitude in the dressing room.

Going back to the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign, we can determine how United have performed in the league with and without Maguire in the side.
Maguire has featured in 71 league matches, with 34 of those being victories. United have drawn 11 and lost 26 matches.
In comparison, in 50 matches without Maguire in the side, they have picked up 21 victories, 11 draws and lost 18 games.
With Maguire, the Red Devils have conceded 92 goals and scored 101. Without they have conceded 74 and scored 67.
The stats show that United concede less goals and average more points with Maguire in the team.
