Hartlepool United remain uncomfortably close to the League 2 relegation zone after they suffered defeat to the zone’s most rooted inhabitants, Leyton Orient, today at Brisbane Road.
22-year-old Rhys Oates opened the scoring for the visiting Durham outfit in the 8th minute but Orient bounced back with first-half goals from Victor Adeboyejo and Tristan Abrahams. ‘The O’s’ hung on to that narrow lead for the remainder of the game to claim a much needed 3 points. Adding to Hartlepool’s woes, defender Liam Donnelly was sent off in injury time after receiving his second yellow card.
Hartlepool are just one point ahead of Newport County AFC, who along with Orient occupy the two relegation spots. Luckily for ‘Pools’, the Welsh side were hammered 6-1 by Plymouth Argyle today. However, in less positive news, the team directly above Hartlepool, Cheltenham Town, went four points clear of United with a 2-1 win over Grimsby.
For long-suffering Hartlepool supporter Jeff Stelling, this was just all too much to take. The Sky Sports presenter wasn’t exactly a beacon of professional impartiality on today’s Soccer Special show. Unable to contain his anger and frustration, Stelling launched into tirades against the Hartlepool players on multiple occasions – once when he thought he was off the air.
