Real Madrid Emerge From Champions League Cracker To Reach Third Consecutive Final

Real Madrid saw off the threat of a battling Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League final for the third year running.

Zinedine Zidane’s side were 2-1 up from the first leg heading into the Bernabeu clash, but Bayern insisted that the tie was far from over.

Indeed, Bayern game the tie the kickstart it needed with just three minutes on the clock. Joshua Kimmich, the Bayern goalscorer in Munich last week, took advantage of some poor defending from Sergio Ramos to prod past Keylor Navas.

Bayern’s lead was not to last, however, as Karim Benzema headed home less than ten minutes later to give Real some sense of control back in the tie.

The defending champions completely turned the match on its head less than 30 seconds into the second half, Benzema capitalising on a massive error by Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich to get his second and put Real 2-1 ahead, 4-2 on aggregate.

Bayern levelled it up on the hour mark courtesy of James Rodriguez (complete with non-celebration) against his parent club – but as much as they huffed and puffed, Jupp Heynckes’ side could not find that crucial third goal and crash out in the Champions League semi-finals for the fourth year out of five.

For Real, meanwhile, they now progress to the final for the third year running, and for the fourth season from five. Zidane and his team will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of Liverpool’s clash with Roma on Wednesday night, safe in the knowledge that one of those two sides will await them in the final in Kiev later this month.
