Well that’s that then. The Republic of Ireland will not be participating in next year’s World Cup after they were embarrassed at the Aviva Stadium as they succumbed to a 5-1 defeat to Denmark in Dublin.
Ireland went 1-0 up after five minutes thanks to a Shane Duffy header but besides a bit of positive play in the aftermath of that goal, Ireland were a shambles. There was no confidence, no substance, no implementation of an effective game plan.
Defensive blunders led to the concession of sloppy goals and ultimately it was one of the worst 90 minutes in the Republic of Ireland’s footballing history.
One man who wears his heart on his sleeve and always give 110% to the cause if James McLean and he was at a loss for words when speak to Tony O’Donoghue of RTÉ Sport immediately after the game.
