Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has emerged as the frontrunner to take over as manager of Scottish Premiership side Celtic ahead of the new season.
Benitez’ contract with Newcastle expires in the summer and despite supporters of the Toon Army demanding that the Spaniard continues as boss of the north-east club, the chances of a new contract seem to hinge on a reported meeting with club owner Mike Ashley this week.
Ashley and Benitez’ relationship has been frayed at times with the former Liverpool boss often frustrated with the lack of ambition shown by the club’s owner.
Benitez has now emerged as the bookies’ favourite to take on the role of permanent manager of Celtic who are currently under the tutelage of interim boss Neil Lennon.
Benitez is currently 5/4 with SkyBet with Neil Lennon (3/1), David Moyes (4/1), Andre Villas-Boas (7/2) and the recently sacked Chris Hughton (15/2) the other possibilities.
