Today’s dramatic penalty shootout victory for tournament hosts Russia over Spain has paved the way for one of the most open sides of the draw in recent World Cup memory. 

Now that Spain are out of the World Cup, one of Russia, England, Croatia, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland or Colombia will be guaranteed to participate in the World Cup final.

Social media has exploded with the potential path to England’s potential first World Cup final appearance since 1966 when they won the competition.

Although we admit it’s a bit early to be talking about England in a World Cup final, it must be said that they will likely never have a better chance than they do now to reach that stage.
