A proper captain’s performance.

Seamus Coleman was absolutely brilliant in Everton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

This win leaves Everton still in the relegation zone, but just two points off Leeds and Burnley with a game in hand.

Everton, while defending for large parts of the game, where undeniably the best team on the pitch, and were good value for their win on the day.

And among those who did some of that defending was Coleman, who put in a defensive performance for the ages for his side.

Coleman set the tone for how the game was going to go for Chelsea in the first-half, when he won the ball back and drove into Chelsea territory.

He rolled back the years with the mazy run, jinking in and out before fooling Rudiger with a body feint and winning a free-kick in a dangerous area.

Rudiger’s foul also saw him pick up a yellow card, which made him alter his entire style of play and err on the side of caution instead of flying into tackles like he normally does.

After Everton took the lead through a Richarlison goal, they had to deal with a number of Chelsea attacks, all of which Coleman looked able to fend off.

Coleman would have been a man-of-the-match contender if it wasn’t for Richarlison’s goal and Jordan Pickford’s heroics in the second-half.

Speaking after the match, Frank Lampard said that he felt the fans in the stadium deserved the man-of-the-match.

He said: “It was difficult, we were always going to be under pressure towards the end and we did brilliantly.

“We dug in. The team, the stadium, the fans. Thanks to the fans… They’re at the middle of it. I’m pleased the players saw it on the way in. They know it, but to really understand it…”
